Wink Space is the first Zipper Architecture in the world designed by Masakazu Shirane and Saya Miyazaki as part of the ‘Art in a Container International Competition’ for 2013 KOBE Biennale. Wink space is a modular installation made from mirrors that formed a giant kaleidoscopic tunnel. It was really a piece of fun and innovation which was declared as the winner of A’Design Award.
“We wanted to create the world’s first zipper architecture. In other words, this polyhedron is completely connected by zippers. And in order to facilitate even more radical change some of the surfaces open and close like windows,” says Shirane.
The inspiration for this creative art came from a concept that architecture so far had been hard, heavy and fixed but however the next generation’s art should be soft, lighting and moving. This idea is inspired by FUSUMA and SHOJI that is used in Japanese traditional housing. The wink space is a third prototype based on this idea.
The designers say, “We believe our concept is suitable for the architecture of the 21st century. To achieve it we have to find new technology, Zipper is one of possibility.”
All the panels in wink space are connected by zippers. The whole aim is to make a kaleidoscope changing with the movement of a person in the container.
