If you’ve been on the Internet for a while, chances are that you know what “Murphy’s laws” are, for other Wikipedia is here to help you. If you’re too lazy to click on the previous link, Murphy’s law pretty much states that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong”.

Based on my own design experience, I share here some Murphy’s laws that relate to design, please add your own in the comments.

If you have 10 minutes to print some work before meeting your client, the printer will go out of ink.

When the printer goes out of ink and you are in a rush, you don’t have any cartridges to replace it.

No matter what the size of the logo is, it’s not big enough for your client.

If your WordPress theme validates, you’ll install a plugin that breaks the validation.

If you have a lot of work, a client you didn’t hear of for years will call you and be in a hurry.

If you don’t make your website work in IE6 before showing it to your client, he will be using IE6.

Remember the internet meme where the users where turning a song into a chart? Well, Twitter just got a new meme where tweeples express a song using code. The hashtag used to follow this meme is #songsincode, so go take a look and you should understand how fun it is if you are just geeky enough.

My favorites so far

These are some songs in code that I found really good…

@3rdEden: if(rickAstly) { rick.rolled = true; }

@glenndavid if (Mc.hammer) { this.touch = false; }

@keithnorm Wall.addBrick();

@madeirac2 while(world.isFree()) { keepOnRocking(); }

@mikemangi if(fire($roof)) { need($water)=NULL; burn($roof);

@gvisor RT e self.target = sheriff; // self.target = deputy; self.selfDefense = YES;

@_saint if (kids != alright) print(“ooOh!”);

@mattmetzger: for each (var person in sky) { if (person == lucy) { add(diamonds) } }

My own attempts

Yeah I did try a few times although my programming skills are terrible…

@mirkohumbert if ( $hotel_name == “california” ) { echo “Welcome”; }

@mirkohumbert $(“people”).event(function (‘HoldingHands’) { $(this).people({‘happy’ : ‘shiny’}); }

@mirkohumbert $(clothes).unload( function () { alert(“Leave your hat on!”); } );

@mirkohumbert if ($Love == 1 || $Heart == 1) echo “Let’s get together and feel alright”;

What about you? Did you see any awesome songs in code or get great ideas?

As a designer, whether you’re freelancing or working for a company, you probably get to meet all kind of clients. Now let’s imagine how it would be to work with hardcore social media users…

The Facebook user

When you arrive at his office, the first thing that strikes you is that every wall has stupid stuff written on it. After a quick introduction, he calls you his “friend” and shows you intimate pictures of his closest friends. After that awkward moment you start working, but he constantly pokes you every time you look away from him. He can’t focus for a minute, always chatting or playing games. When you leave after getting nothing done, he give you a useless small gift.

The Twitter user

You meet him at the company’s front desk, he asks you to “follow” him in his office. As soon as you start following him, a little robot comes to thank you and offer you some useless marketing stuff. That kind of client only speaks in very short sentences, making it hard to express interesting ideas.

The FriendFeed user

If that guy organizes a meeting with you, he will organize five other meetings at the same time… and in the same room! The result is a meeting room with seven people talking at the same time, noone listening to others. Your client gained a lot of time, but nobody knows what the hell is going on, neither does he.

The MySpace user

Some weird emo secretary welcomes you by saying something like “h3Y dÜde LoLZ”, then she brings you in a black room with huge blinking boards. Some horrible hip-hop music starts playing as soon as you get in. That’s too much for you, you die of epileptic seizure before you even get to meet the client.

The Reddit user

He starts by asking you if you can code in Haskell, then lets you enter in the office. A gigantic statue of the “Flying Spaghetti Monster” is standing in the room. For some unknown reason, Ron Paul attends the meeting. The work gets done despite the amount of comments made by the redditor, but at the end of the meeting he kills you because you made a spelling mistake.

The CouchSurfing user

No need to move with this type of client, he settles meeting at your home. While you try to discuss work with him, he gets up and goes get himself a beer in your fridge. You don’t do any work with him, but he’s a cool person to hang out with.

The Digg user

He starts by asking you if you included the Apple logo and XKCD, then he calls his friends to ask to vote on their favourite projects. He explains you that he proceeds that way to be more democratic. When he’s done explaining, MSaleem enters the room and picks a project.

The Wikipedia user

As soon as you meet the Wikipedia user, he asks you to show the projects you’ve worked on. When you show him your work, he starts editing it Reference needed. His friends also come and all start editing your stuff.

This week-end I decided to have a little fun and did my own adaptation of the “Hitler meme“. It’s my very first time editing a video, so I have to apologize for the bad quality of it, I still thought it was funny enough to be shared. Of course, don’t take this seriously, it’s just a joke and not meant to offend anyone.

When confronted to irrational situations, we naturally tend to get lost and lean toward irrational solutions. Debugging Internet Explorer often makes you feel lost, thus pushing you to explore unknown CSS techniques and beyond. I am sharing these techniques with you, but please only use them if you are desperate as they only work once every 10 years.

A great (and true) comic by HijiNKS Ensue

If you can’t fix the problem, take the way around: upgrading your client’s browser

Your client doesn’t know what browser he is using, chances are that he doesn’t even know what a browser is. Hey, we all are just using the internets right? So next time they hit that big blue button, they will just notice that the problem on their site is fixed, nothing else. And trust me, they won’t ask you to test it for cross-browser compatibility.

Puppies can be the best IE6 CSS hacks

Pray the CSS gods, use puppy sacrifices

Vinh Le of Blog Design Blog once advised me to pray the CSS gods to fix some IE6 issues. Of course the right breed of dog has to be used, otherwise your sacrifices may reveal useless. Known issues: chihuahua sacrifices seems to have a compatibility problem with IE6, they don’t work anymore.

Eliminate the problem with the Internet Explorer Voodoo doll

Since Internet Explorer seems to be magically sticking in people’s computers, voodoo might be the only solution left to get rid of it. For those interested by this techniques, there is a tutorial on DeviantArt on how to create your own Internet Explorer Voodoo doll.

Forget about the problem, drink beer, a lot of it

The temporary solution to any problem: alcohol! This will of course not eliminate the problem, but at least you won’t think about it, could you really ask more?

At least the designers I know do, and it seems that designers on the web also do. I’ve noticed different kind of humour, and would like to share with you.

Comics
Comics authors can be considered as designers right? They are of course the most funny designers out there. The latest web comic that really cracked me up was this one about Youtube comments.

The designer’s rant
A good and really funny example can be found on Ghisroy with his post “8 ways to drive a graphic designer mad” (via Swissmiss). Note: designer’s rant are usually directed towards clients and Comic Sans MS.

Making fun of unprofessional products

Like in this hilarious fake ad (loved the “we worked about 8 months to figure out what 12 colors to include within Paint).

Making fun of designers

Is my design beautiful because I am beautiful?

Hope you enjoyed these, and please do not hesitate to share your fun design stuff in comments.
