Interesting concepts for Apple watches

Every time Apple is about to launch a new big product, like the iPhone or the iPad, fanboys go crazy creating some concepts and mockups of what the device could look like. As far as I know, Apple is not planning to start producing watches and didn’t even give any hint that they could. However, Apple’s product design are so inspiring that people will try to emulate it on various other products, in this case watches.

iWatch

This concept takes a lot from Apple’s UI goodness, but the overall product design doesn’t look that good to me. I’m not so sure that the touchpad would be so efficient on such a small screen either.

iCal watch

The idea behind this concept is quite good, but I’m not sure about how practical such an item would be if you can only update it from your computer.

hiPod

A concept that proposes to include the iPod’s functionalities in a watch.

10 creative design ideas for your electric plugs

One of my favorite aspects of design in general is that it helps to improve the most commons items of our daily life. The following electric plugs and concepts illustrate this quite well, they all try to improve the usability and/or the look-and-feel of an appliance we use every day.

1. Plug & Play

A table that plugs straight into your wall, a cute concept by Nothing Design Group. Not very realistic though, I’ve never seen any electrical outlet at that height and I doubt that the plug will be able to support the pressure of the table…

2. Rozetkus 3D power socket concept

A great concept by Studio Art Lebedev: a power socket that adapts to your use of the electrical oulets. If you need one outlet, you can push the socket in the wall, if you need more just pull it out.

3. Hang-on outlet

Even if you are not using your electrical item, they will consume some energy as long as they’re plugged in. This hang-on outlet will make unplugging more comfortable by offering a resting place for your plugs (Via Yanko Design).

4. Picket Fence

A cute way to unclutter the room and hide the wires, not sure it would look great in every home though…

5. Folding plug system

This folding plug system has been built for laptop owners to be able to carry their laptop without being too annoyed by a a plug that takes too much space.

6. Rambler socket concept

Imagined by Meysam Movahedi, this concept tries to make it easier to reach further appliances with your plug. However I have some doubts on the safety of this concept.

7. 360 Electrical

This problem certainly occured to you a lot of times, you get enough space but your plugs will not fit in together. No more of this with the 360 electrical, just rotate your socket and you’re in.

8. WirePod

The elegant way to get multiple plug outlets, quite cool. Via Dezeen.

9. Hu2 Stickers

These eco-reminder should be sticked around your plug sockets to remind you that you are using electricity, looks good.

10. Donut Powerstrip

The Donut Powerstrip does pretty much the same thing as the 360 electrical, it makes sure that that all the outlets are usable. Check more images here.

Industrial design: an interview with Dmitry Samal

Dmitry Samal is a successful freelance designer from Belarus. Specialized in industrial design, he has been exhibiting his work around the world and awarded for it. I thought it would be of interest for Designer Daily’s readers to learn a little more about him through a short interview. Don’t miss more pictures of his work at the end of the post.

How did you get into design?
I guess, it is due to my love to cars. I graduated from Polytechnic’s University in Belarus and got the diploma of car engineer, at the same time I was very interested in car design and I was sketching all the time during the lectures. Later I started to participate in several contests and conferences about car design and finally won the scholarship Audi and Scuola Politechnica di Design in Milan. At that time I realized that car design and design in general is my passion.

Can you tell our readers about your design process?
I always start from sketches and through the sketching I find the idea. I absolutely agree with the words of one of my teachers: “The talent of the designer is at the tip of a pencil”.
Then the idea that I (or my client) find interesting is transferred in 3d (sometimes it is not possible and I try to find another way) which allows me to see this object almost in reality with different materials and situations. And then I do the technical specification based on the 3d model.

What tools and software do you use on a regular basis?
Photoshop (image editing), Rhino (3D modeling).

Which of your projects are you the most proud of and Why?
I am proud of almost every project I have done and I am doing because I always put myself in it, I am trying to work as good and creative as possible.
Also trough my designs I am trying to show the rich culture and traditions of Belarus, not very famous here in Europe.

Which designers have been inspirers for you?
Actually many of successful designers, but especially: Walter da Silva, Marc Newson, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Ron Arad.

You are a car design specialist, which car designs really impressed you in the recent years?
I love the style and image of Audi, Mini and Smart.

Switzerland is much more famous for its typographers or graphic designers, however some product designers from the country are simply amazing, and Jörg Boner is one of them. His work is simple and functional, yet beautiful. I’ve gathered a few examples to let you judge for yourselves. For more you should visit his website and have a look for yourself.

The Wogg armchair, simple comfy chair coming in different colours.

To go with the armchair, the elegant Wogg table and its nicely rounded corners.

Volata, round or square table created for Tossa. The two tables above are for home or bistros, but there are other Volata tables for other usages.

Every typography lover is by definition a fan of printed documents. However, beautiful typography can be also be found on objects and products. This post is a selection of great typography-based objects that you will enjoy for sure.
