Tesla cars are often seen as the “cars of the future” because of their revolutionary battery system. While it’s true that the electric cars may well be a great step towards more environmentally-conscious vehicles, it’s the whole attitude of the company that makes it a key player for the years to come.

The company innovates in many other aspects, like the way the cars receive wireless updates that enable new functionalities. The latest update allows for one stunning new feature: autopilot. The feature was announced last year, and Elon Musk recently said that it’s about to be released very soon. The Model S were already upgraded last fall to make autopilot possible.

This is pretty big news, because it may very well be the way we progressively switch to self-driving cars. I often wondered how the self-driving cars would be entering the market. Studies proved that driverless cars are safer than cars driven by humans, but the transitional period with both types of cars might be more dangerous. Tesla’s solution is a progressive enhancement that will probably bring self-driving cars on the road more smoothly by making the transition easier.

You can check the autopilot demo video released by DragTimes on Youtube. Apart from Model S EV released after the fall of 2014, the autopilot feature will also be available on Model X for now. In a near future, new features should be added to this autopilot functionality, like automatic parallel parking and more.
