It’s somewhat reassuring that legendary designers like Saul Bass also had some designs rejected, it makes them a bit more like us. Obviously, having your designs rejected by Stanley Kubrick isn’t exactly like being rejected by your local garage for their newspaper ads.
On this post you can see the five first designs submitted by Bass to Kubrick for the movie poster of The Shining. Kubrick had a deep look at every aspect of the movie, as you can see on the notes that are included in the designs. As you could suspect, his comments are all on point, the final design he pushed for is much more relevant and powerful.
